Understanding Tool Coverage
Standard Homeowner & Renter Policies
Section titled “Standard Homeowner & Renter Policies”Most homeowner and renter policies cover tools as personal property, but with important limitations:
- Sublimits — many policies cap tool coverage at $1,500–$2,500, regardless of your actual collection value
- Deductibles — you’ll pay out of pocket up to your deductible before coverage kicks in
- Depreciation — some policies pay actual cash value (depreciated), not replacement cost
If your tool collection exceeds your policy’s sublimit, you may be significantly underinsured.
Scheduled Personal Property
Section titled “Scheduled Personal Property”For high-value tools, you can add a scheduled personal property endorsement — listing specific tools individually with agreed values. This typically:
- Removes sublimits for those items
- May provide broader coverage (including accidental damage)
- Requires documentation of value (receipts, appraisals)
What to Do
Section titled “What to Do”- Pull your current policy and find the personal property sublimit for tools
- Use ToolDB’s Analytics to see your collection’s total value
- If there’s a gap, contact your insurance agent about additional coverage
- Generate a ToolDB PDF report to share with your agent as documentation
